Current competition 2026 - BETWEEN THE CENTRES. Ideas for a sporting and cultural centre

The town of Radebeul has two historic centres, Radebeul-Ost and Radebeul-West. The centre in between, with its cultural and sports facilities, is important for the city as a whole and is easily accessible by train and car. However, it does not present the image of a centre. Traffic facilities and derelict areas divide up the urban space, there is a lack of public spaces and cycling and pedestrian traffic encounters barriers. A sporty, cultural and green centre for everyone is to be created here. New connections are to open up a space which, with a strong social infrastructure, will unfold its potential as a city centre for the first time.

Jury

The jury is appointed by the First Mayor of the City of Radebeul in his capacity as Deputy Mayor for Urban Development and Construction. The expert jury consists of five expert judges and at least one representative. In addition, non-voting judges will be appointed. Further experts or guests may be invited to the jury meeting by the organiser.

Questions and answers about the 2026 ideas competition

Are all the youth hostel buildings dilapidated and to be demolished?

The buildings are in varying states of preservation. The old building in the centre of the site in particular appears to be worth preserving. However, in view of the youth hostel's reorientation towards inclusion and the planned doubling or tripling of the number of beds, there are many arguments in favour of assuming a completely new development on the site. Even if the old building could be integrated into a new overall concept, the building itself can only be remodelled to meet future requirements at great expense, if at all. Against this background, all existing buildings should be called into question.

Who uses the launcher in magnifying glass room 2 and how often? Does it have to be included in the new planning?

The throwing facility is only used a few times a week, but takes up a lot of space due to the safety areas. For this reason, such facilities no longer fit into the new concept for the Radebeul centre and therefore do not need to be included in the planning.

Are there mapped species/biotopes and existing trees and shrubs for the design area?

There are no identified biotopes in the design area. A new mapping will take place by September 2026 and can therefore no longer be taken into account in the current competition. Trees, where mapped, have been submitted with the data. During the site inspection, the "wilderness" between loupe rooms 1 and 2, which has a conspicuous jump in terrain, was impressive.

Is there a floor plan of the current Meda building? For example, on the ground floor for planning the main entrance and the outdoor facilities?

The ground floor plan and a section will be made available to all registered participants via a download link.

It would be helpful to know the extent of the extensions to the Krokofit sports complex and the new walkway at this point.

The framework plan already shows both, an updated section of the plan is available for download. The new indoor swimming pool and the extended entrance area with central changing room can be recognised. The existing indoor swimming pool will be converted into an event hall with outdoor areas once the new swimming pool has been completed. The new thoroughfare in the area of the new indoor swimming pool will become a mixed traffic area.

Are there any approximate indications of the dimensions of the new cellar building ("Genusswelt Hoflößnitz")?

Wine market 184.00 square metres gross floor area, office 172.00 square metres gross floor area, wine press house 514.00 square metres gross floor area, production 290.00 square metres gross floor area. The dimensions are for guidance only.

Who will operate the sports facilities in Lupenraum 1?

It can be assumed that a small pitch is operated by a limited company and rented out to clubs, for example, whereas a public football pitch is maintained by the city, similar to a green space.
