  • Total size: 33.8 ha
  • Redevelopment agency: STEG Stadtentwicklung GmbH
  • Implementation period: 2003 - 2025
  • Total funding framework: €21.6 million (1/3 each federal, state and municipal funds)

Looking back

Over a period of around 20 years, considerable funding was invested in the redevelopment and redesign of buildings, squares and streets in the district centre of Radebeul-Ost, transforming a formerly dull district into a lively and attractive centre.
The station forecourt is undoubtedly the heart of Radebeul-Ost. Life pulsates here. Train travellers, adult education students, bookworms, culture lovers, bank customers, patients, café guests and, last but not least, the locals on their way to the supermarket - they all come together here and enjoy this place that offers so much quality of stay.

In the town hall area, the aim was to bring the offices scattered throughout the town centre together in one place and thus enable residents to travel short distances. In addition, the shielded, partly fenced-in and unsightly site was to be opened up and given an attractive design. The offices are connected by a green area, which has a very individual character with the wedding garden, the vines and the four benches for Radebeul's twin towns.

The plan to develop the main street with the station area as a commercial centre has also come to fruition with the redevelopment area. Everything is within walking distance - not only shops and restaurants, but also services of all kinds as well as doctors' surgeries and healthcare facilities. The infrastructure in Radebeul-Ost offers everything you need with the two schools, the after-school care centre, the centre for public authorities, the tourist information office and the bus and train connections.
The majority of the private buildings have been preserved and renovated through extensive modernisation and repairs, whereby the established townscape, in particular the historic village centre of Altradebeul and the Wilhelminian-style centre along the main street, has been preserved. It was possible to optimise the use of the buildings - primarily for residential purposes - and at the same time create the conditions for the development of trade, crafts and services. The newly constructed residential and commercial buildings on the former Glasinvest site finally completed the last piece of the cityscape puzzle.
The traffic situation was significantly improved through new traffic routing (e.g. extension of Gartenstrasse) and traffic calming measures (e.g. one-way traffic on Hauptstrasse). In addition, the number of parking spaces was increased locally. The streets and access areas were expanded and adapted to the new requirements and uses. Anyone travelling through the redevelopment area today - whether by car or bicycle - will quickly notice that the roads are in very good condition. Between 2006 and 2019, a total of almost 20 construction measures were implemented, always with the aim of creating better conditions and greater safety for all road users.
Attractive public open spaces such as squares and footpaths were also created to strengthen the experience and identity of the neighbourhood. Places such as the wedding garden, Robert-Werner-Platz, Hauptstraße, Brunnenplatz, Karl-May-Hain with adventure playground, the Lutherkirche parish hall and the "Am Kreis" area have become lively meeting places. In this context, five fountains were also created to enrich the townscape.

The newly built Schillerhort is the crowning glory of the extensive school construction projects in the redevelopment area, which began in September 2006 with the redesign of the playground of the Friedrich Schiller primary school, followed by the renovation of the gymnasium and the redesign of the schoolyards of the primary school and the grammar school.

Today, Radebeul-Ost has developed into a sought-after inner-city residential location that includes a lively business and cultural centre around Hauptstraße and the railway station. The redevelopment goals that were set have been successfully realised.
