Uusikuu – that’s Vintage Sounds of Finland, a Finnish world music band that’s once again spreading good cheer with their sixth album, *Piknik* (February 2025 on Nordic Notes). The five musicians, led by singer and composer Laura Ryhänen, are dedicated to traditional Finnish light music from the 1930s to the 1960s, but on their new album they also venture into the 70s and 80s.

Their style is a rousing mix of fiery tangos, dreamy waltzes, cheeky jenkkas, cheerful humppas and light-footed swing. The line-up consists of Laura Ryhänen (vocals), Mikko Kuisma (violin, vocals), Norbert Bremes (accordion, backing vocals), James Geier (guitar, backing vocals) and Florian Dohrmann (double bass, backing vocals).

Founded in 2006, the band has since played over 300 concerts across Europe and received numerous awards, including the 2023 German Rock & Pop Award for Best World Music Album (‘Karuselli’), a nomination for the Eiserner Eversteiner, and a nomination for the German Record Critics’ Award’s Top 20 list for February 2025.

In March 2025, “Piknik” also made it into the Top 20 of the World Music Charts Europe. Uusikuu’s music is lively, full of joie de vivre and quirky humour – and has always encouraged the audience to sing along and dance.
