The Lößnitzgrund

The natural landscape of the Lößnitzgrund lies to the south of Buchholz-Friedewald, is considered the largest valley incision on the Elbe slope of the Lusatian Plateau and forms part of the "Lößnitz Landscape Conservation Area". The meandering Lößnitzbach stream forms this notch valley, which, along with Fiedlergrund and Rietzschkegrund, is one of the most water-bearing valleys in the Radebeul urban area. From a geological point of view, the Lößnitzgrund divides the two main types of soil found on the Lusatian plateau in the area of the Lößnitz: on the one hand, loess, which occurs on the eastern slope, and on the other hand, heather sand, which determines the western hillside. The tree population is characterised by oaks (especially pedunculate oaks), copper beeches and hornbeams; other deciduous trees have taken root in the area of the stream, and the bird life is also rich in species diversity.
