The fiery red flower

Fairytale play by Leonid Braussewitsch and Irina Karnauchowa

Translated from the Russian by Renate Landa | ages 5 and up

A merchant sets off on a long journey and asks his three beloved daughters what he should bring them. While the older ones want beautiful clothes and jewellery, the youngest, Alyonushka, expresses an unusual wish: she wants the fiery red flower. While the older children's wishes are easily fulfilled on the journey, the younger girl's wish drives her father into Baba Yaga's enchanted forest. He has difficulty escaping the witch's traps and finally arrives at an enchanted castle. Here he is generously entertained and finds the long-sought fiery red flower. But when he picks it, disaster strikes: a voice promises the merchant death as punishment for stealing the flower. The merchant has only one last wish - he wants to say goodbye to his daughters. To save him, the youngest bravely sets off for the castle, determined to serve her strict master. By the time Alyonushka finally gets to see him, she has come to know his true, kind nature and is no longer deceived by his terrible appearance.

The fairy tale, made famous by the 1978 Russian film, is a variation on »Beauty and the Beast« and shows us that it is worth finding out the true nature of every human being. No matter how strange and frightening their appearance may seem at first glance.
