The collection »A Musicall Banquett« (a musical banquet) was something completely new when it was offered to a music-loving London public in 1610 - during the reign of the Catholic James I - with the central notice on the title page that it contained a »number of delicious lute songs«, »collected from the best authors in English, French, Spanish and Italian«. The editor was the then nineteen-year-old Robert Dowland, son of the English court lutenist John Dowland, who left behind only this and a single other collection, also published in 1610, both without any compositional contribution of his own. The impressive print, published in the typically wide, upright folio format, offers a kind of cross-section of European solo singing around 1600 - from Giulio Caccini, active at the grand ducal court of the Medici in Florence, to a series of contributions by Robert's famous father John, including »In darkness let me dwell«, one of the most important song creations of the time.

Like a cook, Robert Dowland writes in his preface that there is no need to fear poisoning, as the mixture of English, French, Spanish and Italian music presented has been tasted before.

Guests at the concert in the Hoflößnitz can expect a multilingual feast for the ears, performed by the celebrated Romanian-German countertenor Valer Sabadus and Johannes Ötzbrugger on the Renaissance lute, who will switch to its deeper-sounding descendant, the theorbo, for instrumental interludes.

The price includes the opportunity to visit the Saxon Wine Museum on the day of the concert as well as a glass of sparkling wine from the Hoflößnitz or optionally a non-alcoholic drink, which will be served from 1 hour before the concert. All prices include 7 % VAT.

Admission is from 30 minutes before the concert begins.
