4th chamber concert
"Aguirre and other travelling musicians" Music and dances from Spain & South America. LOS OTROS (Hille Perl - viola da gamba, Steve Player & Lee Santana - guitars)
Musicians eager to learn have probably always travelled the world in search of new influences and have enjoyed exploring traditions and techniques unknown to them. After trade with the »New World« began to shake the old European world view in the 16th century, musical exchange with America also took place to an increasing extent. Starting from the Iberian Peninsula, this influenced the Canary Islands in particular and extended as far as South and Central America.
The Spanish-born Sebastián de Aguirre, about whom we know little, published a sketch-like textbook for a cister-like instrument in Mexico in the 17th century. It contains a number of works that point to its origins in folk music. Lee Santana has painstakingly deciphered these obscure pieces and brought them back to life in dialogue with musicians from Latin America. They form the core of the Los Otros ensemble's concert at the Hoflößnitz.
Los Otros, who are themselves well-travelled musicians, have combined their version of »Canarios«, a folk dance from the Canary Islands, from two sophisticated arrangements by the Spanish baroque guitarists Gaspar Sanz and Santiago de Murcia. They also perform works by Antonio Martín Y Coll, which appeared in his collection »Flores de Música« at the beginning of the 18th century. Los Otros have compiled the imaginary »Marañones Suite« from it. Its name refers to the legendary river Marañon in Peru, which served as a route for the mad conquistador Lope de Aguirre in 1560. It is not known whether this Aguirre, who allegedly fought against the exploitation of the new lands by the Spanish crown, was related to the musician Sebastián de Aguirre, who was active a century later. In any case, they both shared a thirst for adventure.
