On the occasion of the Karl May Festival 2026, we present the film "SO SURREAL: BEHIND THE MASKS". Join us on a fascinating journey that explores the depth of masks and the perspectives they open up.

The film follows the traces of masks from the Yup'ik and Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw cultures. It tells of their significance, their path into the world and the people they have touched - although many of them have been torn from their communities of origin.

Some masks were left behind after rituals, others ended up in unknown hands along unknown paths. But they all left something behind: they opened doors to new worlds and touched those who encountered them.
