Lößnitzbad Radebeul is enriched with oxygen: New measure to combat blue-green algae
15.10.2024
The popular Lößnitzbad in Radebeul will become more attractive for bathers in future thanks to an innovative oxygenation measure. For several years now, blue-green algae has regularly appeared here, often making swimming in the lake impossible early in the summer. In order to combat this problem in the long term and make the lake usable as a bathing area again, a large-scale project is now being carried out to install aeration hoses. The aim of this measure is to increase the oxygen content of the lake in order to restore the biological balance and reduce blue-green algae contamination in the long term.
The aeration tubes are laid with the support of the innovative Drausy® system, which distributes the oxygen evenly across the bottom of the lake. This triggers natural processes for the decomposition of digested sludge and excess nutrients, which favour the development of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). The system works with fine air bubbles, which have a long retention time in the water and enable resource-saving and efficient treatment of the lake.
"With this measure, we want to give the citizens of Radebeul back a clean and safe bathing area that they can use again without any health risks. The project is an important step towards sustainable development and climate protection in the region," explained Björn Ziegenbalg (Managing Director of sbf GmbH).
The project costs around 140,000 euros. It is supported by a funding commitment from KfW as part of the "Climate protection for local authorities" programme, which covers over 80% of the costs. The oxygen enrichment not only serves to directly improve the water quality, but also contributes to the long-term maintenance and stabilisation of the natural balance in the lake.
With this initiative, the town of Radebeul is demonstrating its commitment to protecting the environment and improving the quality of life of its residents. Bathers will soon be able to look forward to carefree bathing fun in the fresh, clean water of the Lößnitzbad again.
