Stumbling stones in Radebeul
Stumble. Remember. Don't forget - Stumbling Stones in Radebeul
Since 2005, 12 Stumbling Stones have been laid in Radebeul for people who lived here - and were disenfranchised, humiliated, expelled, abused or murdered under National Socialism.
Stolpersteine are an art and memorial project by >> Gunter Demnig. In 1995, he began making concrete cubes with a brass plate, which are inscribed with the names, dates of life, stages of persecution and fate of those persecuted. These are usually laid in front of the last freely chosen place of residence of the persecuted person. Over 107,000 Stolpersteine have now been laid throughout Europe.
The first five >> Stolpersteine for the Freund family were laid in Moritzburger Straße on 26 July 2005. On the initiative of the Radebeul History Working Group and pupils from Lößnitzgymnasium, the city council decided in December 2022 to continuously lay more Stolpersteine in Radebeul. Three more Stolpersteine for the Schaye family followed on 17 June 2024 >> on Augustusweg and >> Meißner Straße. The AG Geschichte Radebeul organises the laying of the stones in cooperation with Radebeul schools and the >> association "Stolpersteine für Dresden e. V.".
Alongside the other memorials, the Stolpersteine show that Radebeul was also a place of marginalisation, persecution and crime during the National Socialist era. They invite people to look, pause and explore the biographies behind the names - as starting points for an active culture of remembrance. To this end, various organisations in the city sponsor the Stolpersteine.
