The partnership with the city of Obukhiv has existed since 1999 and has developed over time into a lively friendship with numerous civic links and projects. Over the years, a regular exchange of delegations of municipal representatives, associations and citizens has been established. Furthermore, aid shipments are organised on a regular basis.
The city of Obukhiv (Ukrainian Обухів; Russian Обухов/Obuchov) is located in central Ukraine, 45 km south-west of the Ukrainian capital Kiev and 178 km south-east of Chernobyl.
In the 1970s, Obukhiv developed from a village with agriculture and crafts into an industrial city. As a district town with a population of around 40,000, the city administers 43 localities in an area of 773 km².
More than 18 ethnic groups live in the twin town and peaceful coexistence is guaranteed in both public and private life. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russian was replaced by Ukrainian as the only official language in Ukraine. But the overwhelming majority in all parts of Ukraine believe that a citizen of their country should speak both Russian and Ukrainian.
Student exchange
Lößnitzgymnasium Radebeul has had a partner school in Obukhiv, Ukraine, since April 2011. A German-Ukrainian student exchange project takes place every two years. During the exchange, which also includes class visits, the pupils are accommodated in host families and get to know the culture and language.
