Wackerbarth Castle or Wackerbarth's Haven

The area that is today a state vineyard was acquired in 1727 by Count and Field Marshal August Christoph von Wackerbarth. According to his own specifications, he had a palace-like estate built by  the Saxon Chief State Architect Johann Christoph Knöffel in 1728. A French-style garden was laid out between the terrace and the belvedere, complemented on both sides by rows of farm buildings. Despite several alterations, the baroque symmetry was preserved.

From the time of Wackerbarth's purchase,Wackerbarth Castle was under the direct control of the Dresden office until 1839, when it became part of the newly formed rural municipality of Niederlößnitz.

In 1875 the main building was completely rebuilt in the style of the Italian Renaissance.

In 1916, the estate was restored in the original baroque style by factory owner Alfred Tiedemann.

In 1958 it became the property of the Radebeul Volksweingut and underwent extensive renovation between 1974 and 1977.

Privatised in 1990, Schloss Wackerbarth came into the possession of the Free State of Saxony in 1992, which turned it into a wine experience, opening in 2002

A visit to the wine cellar and the inn is highly recommended. A nice glass of Saxon mulled wine makes a special treat during the colder months. The popular winter drink was invented here in 1834 by August Raugraf von Wackerbarth, a great-grandnephew of the castle's founder.

With its baroque palace, gardens and picturesque slopes, the winery continues to enchant its guests to this day.

With daily tours of the modern wine and sparkling wine production facility, an in-house restaurant and a plethora of outstanding events, Schloss Wackerbarth enables over 190,000 guests a year to experience Saxon wine and sparkling wine with all their senses. All winery guests learn about Saxony’s more than 850-year-old tradition of wine-growing and why Wackerbarth’s speciality sparkling wines are joggled and not shaken.
