Hoflößnitz Winery - Centre of Saxony's Wine Culture Landscape

The idyllic, listed Hoflößnitz is a jewel of Saxony's wine cultural landscape as well as the first and only producer in Saxony that has dedicated itself entirely to organic cultivation and presses certified organic Saxon wines. Saxony's only viticulture museum is housed in the adjacent buildings and outdoor area and has permanent and special exhibitions on regional viticulture.

The "Saxon Wine Route" visitor centre offers a wealth of information about the entire wine-growing region in one central location.

The Hoflößnitz is the cradle of Saxon viticulture. The Margraves of Meissen owned vineyards in Kötzschenbroda since 1401 at the latest. The core of the complex is the associated press house, equipped with a large tree press, which was first mentioned in 1563. In the 17th century, a residential building for the mine administrator was added. The Berg- und Lusthaus, which was intended for representative purposes, was commissioned by the Elector Johann Georg I in the middle of the 17th century.

The outwardly simple, two-storey building with a high hipped roof is modelled on the style of older manor houses in the Lößnitz region and was itself a stylistic influence on later manor house buildings in the region. The upper floor houses a banqueting hall and the electoral living quarters, which were sumptuously painted by court painter Christian Schiebling and Centurio Wiebel. The ceiling of the hall is decorated with 80 paintings by Albert Eyckhout depicting Brazilian bird species.

A royal Saxon state vineyard since 1834, it was dismembered and auctioned off after the phylloxera disaster in 1889. After several changes of ownership and the reconstruction of the manor house in the style of historicism, the core of the historic estate became the property of the Hoflößnitz Association in 1912, which restored the buildings in preparation for public use in accordance with the preservation order.  In 1924, a museum of local history and a youth hostel were established. In 1949, the site was transferred to the Volkseigene Gut Weinbau "Lößnitz". In the summer of 1992,it was transferred back into municipal ownership and wine production started again on the site.
