Historic village green Altkötzschenbroda

  • Historic village green Altkötzschenbroda

The road through the centre of the historic village of Kötzschenbroda has been known as Altkötzschenbroda since 1935.

In the 17th century, the village green was still divided - by a community-owned slaughterhouse that stood across it, and also had baking, tavern and hostelry rights.

The smaller eastern part in front of the Friedenskirche was called the market.

And indeed, the weekly markets of Kötzschenbroda were held here.

The larger, western part has been known as Hauptstraße since the middle of the 19th century.

The layout of the village square is almost identical to that of a Franconian roadside village, with narrow courtyards reaching far back. Most of the preserved farmhouses and cottages date from the 19th century.

Besides the church and the vicarage, the most prominent buildings are the Oberschänke and the Hotel Goldener Anker with the steel fountain sculpture "Gegen den Strom" by Karl Menzen, erected in 1999.

Since its redesign in 1990, the village green has become a popular promenade with numerous pubs, cafés, galleries and smart boutiques. Its proximity to the Elbe cycle path, and also the annual autumn and wine festivals and the Radebeul Christmas market held here, have made Altkötzschenbroda one of the village’s key tourist attractions.
