For generations Karl May (1842-1912) has been one of the best-loved and most-widely read German writers. His adventure tales set in the American West and in the Orient of the 19th century have sold close to one hundred million copies in German. His work has been translated into more than 30 languages.
The author's reception room, study and library have been faithfully restored, and since 1995 they have been on public view once again with their original furnishings. With its precious manuscripts and personal possessions the museum provides a fascinating insight into the life, the works and the influence of this famous Saxon author who soared to fame as the creator of immortal fictional characters such as Winnetou and Old Shatterhand, Hadschi Halef Omar and Kara Ben Nemsi.
An original collection of the legendary weapons used by the heroes of the novels, Winnetou and Old Shatterhand, is on display in the museum.

The Karl May Museum displays over 850 fascinating items depicting the life and culture of the Indians of North America, from the pre-Columbian era to the present day in this collection, which is unique in Europe. The log cabin was built in 1926 as a residence for Patty Frank, who donated his extensive collection of Indian artifacts to the Karl May foundation. Together with Klara and Karl May's collection it forms the foundation for today's museum, which has been visited by over seven million people from all over the world since it opened in 1928.
